A New Earth:

Awakening to Your Life Purpose*

By Eckhart Tolle

Summary by Marjorie Nevins

The Flowering of Human Consciousness: Evocation

Earth one morning, 114 million years ago, when the sun rose, the first flower appeared on the planet. The flower opens and receives the rays of the sun. The flower experiences a momentous evolutionary transformation in the life of plants. The planet had been covered with vegetation for millions of years.

After a time, widespread flowering occurred, then an explosion of color and scent all over the planet.

These fragrant beings we call flowers played an essential role in the evolution of consciousness of another species, humans. Inspiration developed in the human, beyond the flight or fight response. Hope is a realization, "an enlightenment" that there was a physical world of form, and, the formless, that comes from Spirit. "Enlightenment" is a leap to a different level of Being. We began to perceive the indwelling consciousness or spirit in all life Being, its essence, and begin to love it as ourselves.

The Purpose of This Book

It is to wake up the individual ego and let it know it may be a prisoner to its own personality. The book is to help you recognize you are more. It will transform you and you will become aware of the unawake state of consciousness within each being. You'll become aware you are more than ego.

Our Inherited Dysfunction

Sin, literally translated from the ancient Greek means missing the target, missing the mark, or missing the point of human existence. Wherever you go, whatever you do, will manifest in every situation sooner or later. Becoming aware of our growing consciousness, we transform and become aware of the never ending evolving. As an aware being that changes, the conditions change and we move above the suffering . It is a temporary state of consciousness that passes.

When an individual life-form or a species survival is threatened, it will die, become extinct, or, rise above the limitations of its condition through an evolutionary leap. Many are experiencing the breakup of the old egoic mind patterns and the emergence of a new dimension of consciousness . We are transcending thought and realizing a dimension within SELF that is more vast than thought.

You become aware the voice in your head is not who you are. You are the Observer. You observe and learn to reprogram and no longer identify with form. You are more. "A new heaven" is the emergence of a transformed state of human consciousness, and a "new earth" is the reflection in the physical realm. Human life and human consciousness are one with the planet, so when the old consciousness dissolves, there will be geographic and climatic natural upheavals in many parts of the planet.

Ego: The Current State of Humanity

Words, no matter whether they are vocalized and made into sounds or remain unspoken cast a hypnotic spell on you. You easily lose yourself in believing that is who you are. Once you can move above this

Identity, or label, you become aware of your connection to the SOURCE. Moving beyond thought, you become empowered to use thought and not become trapped by thoughts, words, labels or images.

This book is about disentangling your sense of I of Beingness, from all things. A depth returns to your life.

EGO is a conglomeration of recurring thought forms and conditioned mental-emotional patterns that are invested with a sense of I, a sense of self. Ego arises when your sense of Beingness, of "I AM", which is formless consciousness, gets mixed up with form. This is the meaning of identification.

Forgetfulness of Being, the primary error, the illusion of absolute separateness that turns reality into a nightmare.

"The consciousness that says "I AM" is not the consciousness that thinks, per Jean-Paul Sartre. Jean-Paul Sartre looked at Descartes' statement "I think, therefore I am" very deeply and suddenly realized, in his own words, "The consciousness that says "I am" is not the consciousness that thinks. It is the awareness that says "I am".

When you are aware that you are thinking, that awareness is not part of thinking. It is a different dimension of consciousness. It is this awareness of consciousness that says "I am"; not the one that thinks. When you become aware you are thinking that awareness is not thinking.

If there were nothing but thought in you, you wouldn't know you were thinking. You would be like a dreamer that does not know he is dreaming. Many people live like sleepwalkers, trapped in old dysfunctional mind-sets that continuously recreate the same nightmarish reality. When you know you are dreaming, you are awake in the dream. Another dimension of consciousness has come in.

The Peace That Passes all Understanding

Many lose all their possessions, others family members, others their social position, reputation, or physical abilities. Whatever they identified with, whatever gave them their sense of self, had been taken away.

Then suddenly and inexplicably, the anguish or intense fear they initially felt gave way to a sacred sense of Presence, a deep peace and serenity and complete freedom from fear.

St. Paul used the expression, "the peace of God which passeth all understanding".

When forms that you identify with, that gave you your sense of self collapse or are taken away, it can lead to a collapse of ego, since ego is identification to form. When forms around you die or death approaches, your sense of Beingness, of I AM, is freed from its entanglement with form: Spirit is released from its imprisonment in matter. You realize your identity is consciousness itself, rather then what consciousness had identified with. That's the peace of God. The ultimate truth of who you are is not I am this or I am that, but I AM. Whenever tragic loss occurs, you either resist or you yield. Some people become bitter or deeply resentful; others become compassionate, wise and loving. Yielding means inner acceptance of what is. You are open to life.

The Core of Ego

Most people completely identify with the voice in the head, the incessant stream of involuntary compulsive thinking and the emotions that accompany it - that we may describe them as being possessed by their mind.

As long as you remain unaware of this, you take the thinker to be who you are. The sense of self, of I (ego), in every thought - memory, interpretation, opinion, viewpoint, reaction, and emotion, become who we think we are. Our thinking, the content of your mind, the ego, is your conditioned past. Your upbringing, culture, family background, your learned behavior, from repetitive and persistent thoughts and emotions and reactive patterns you identify with most strongly.

Once you become aware that the ego, I is a program of learned behavior, but it is not you; you can take charge and modify the learned behaviors that no longer allow you to evolve in a healthy way. This voice in the head, will fight so that it remains in charge. But with conscious awareness, that it is not the I AM, it can be disciplined by you. When you become aware of the collective dysfunction in humanity, of complaining and finding fault, you realize it is the other persons ego (the role that constantly repeats). You become aware what the ego is. When you realize it is not personal, there is no longer a compulsion to react as if it were. By not reacting to the ego, you will often be able to bring out the sanity in others, which is an unconditional consciousness, as opposed to a conditioned . Being conscious of what you say, think and do in the present moment, allows you to recognize an old pattern and the pattern is weakened.

The truth is inseparable from who you are. You are the truth. If you look elsewhere, you will be deceived every time. The very Being that you are is truth. Jesus tried to convey that when he said, "I am the way, the truth and the life." Jesus speaks of the innermost I AM, the essence identity of every man and woman, every life-form. He speaks of the life you are, the Christ within.

Words reduce the reality of what you are.

I-illusory sense of self is the eye (I), optical illusion of self (the I). I is the reflection of illusion, the seeing of who you are not and then seeing who you are.

Thinking without awareness is the main dilemma of human existence. Free the Self of compulsive thinking and of the mind-made I. Thinking is only a tiny aspect of who we are.

Truth relative or Absolute

The truth is just a story, a bundle of thoughts, you believe that someone created. The characters include a hero and a victim. Human life becomes less important that the story.

The Catholic church and other churches are correct when they identify relativism, the belief that there is no absolute truth to guide human behavior. Thought can at best point to truth, but is never is the truth.

Thinking and ego are small part of consciousness, which include content and structure, a conditioning environment, education, egoic mind - identification, make it same as self, all part of the ego. Things add something to sense of Self (advertisement) makes you stand out, an identity enhancer. Age, gender, social structure, keep buying, things are part of physical life. Honor, do not despise beingness. Even inanimate objects have spirit.

Most people don't have a living reality. They have attachment - an obsessive compulsion. You can't feel the life you are, so you fill your life with things. Does your Self worth depend on things you own?

Can you discover the stillness within? How important are special things to your self worth, like rings, a house, clothes, etc? You can't take them with you when you die. Let go. Has it affected who you are?

The joy of Being is when you get out of your head. The ring is just a thought. Attachment is the Ego.

If someone takes your shirt, give them your coat.

Life gives you the experience you need at this time to evolve your consciousness. Observe Ego inside the Self. It is not who you are. No thing has anything to do with who you are. When you take away one identification, the ego quickly replaces it with something else. The content changes, but the structure of the ego does not change. Wanting is structural. Ego is greedy. It looks a the world as lifeless. Egoic structure makes you feel lack within.

Gender forces you into a role. In the west, perceived beauty of the physical body can define the Self Worth. Feel your body within. Do not identify with the body without. Physical form is impermanent. Right nutrition, exercise and identification are ego, not who you are. You have an essence, life force and physical body.

Non-reaction to others allows you to go beyond ego. Non-reactions to ego, dissolves collective ego.

To forgive, - overlook ego for the individuals essence.

Not personal - by not reacting to ego you can bring out the sanity in others.

Sanity - unconditioned consciousness, out of conditional.

Non-reaction is strength. Forgive overlook, look through, stay conscious, stay aware.

Person or situation can be made an enemy if you don't focus on the essence of the other person or situation.

Life itself is the present moment.

Facts are always neutral.

Ego does not want to change.

You are not the voice. You are the awareness of voice, thinker-the ego, an old bundle of thought forms of who you think you are, a conditioned bundle of thought patterns.

Awareness and ego cannot co-exist. Try to recognize the voice in the head as the ego, which is no more than a conditioned mind pattern. You are not the voice, but you are the awareness of it. In the background is the awareness. In the foreground is the voice, the thinker. You are becoming free of the ego when you become aware of the old conditioned mind patterns. Ego implies unawareness. Awareness and EGO can not co-exist.
